since red hat is no longer free, is centos the best alternative to red hat?

Probably is the best, if you are looking for a distro as close to Red Hat as possible. The people I know who use Centos seem pretty happy with it.

Of course, there are plenty of other alternative distros to Red Hat, if you are willing to expand your horizons a bit. My favorite is Debian.

Also depends a bit on what you want your computer to do for you. (Serve web files? Desktop computer?)

In my Opinion Ubuntu being best alternative for home users as it is too much user friendly

Centos is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and considering this it is the best alternative as it is free :).

Also, Centos is much more stable then Fedora Core and yeah..it is supported much longer.
