Subject: Can't Install Linux, Likely No Drivers for My Video Card

Here are my system specifications:

Processor: AMD Athlon 4600+ Dual-Core (2.4 gigahertz)
Motherboard Version: GIGABYTE GA-M78SM-S2H SOCKET AM2+
Onboard Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 8200
Random Access Memory: 2 gigabytes PC2-6400 Super Talent (running in dual channel mode)
Hard Drives: 74.5 gigabyte Seagate ST380815AS and 74.5 gigabyte Western Digital WD800JB-00ETA0
Optical Drive: Sony NEC Optiarc Black AD-7200S-0B
Power Supply: OKIA-450ATX 450 Watt
Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit

I used Ubuntu 7.10 32-bit and OpenSuse 32-bit for several months with my old system and it worked great. Then I upgraded my system and have been having nothing but problems installing Linux on this new system. I have tried to install the following Linux operating systems to no avail on the above system:

Ubuntu 7.10 32-bit
Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit
Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit
OpenSuse 32-bit

I want to do a dual boot with Ubuntu 8.04. I am almost certain the error messages I keep getting during installation have to do with my video card. I don't think there are any video drivers with Linux that work with my video card. I would like to buy a new video card, but I want one that is at least as good or better than my current and most importantly works with Ubuntu 8.04. My price limit is $80, and I would like to have at least 512 megabytes of memory on the video card. Anybody know of a video card that works well with Linux Ubuntu 8.04?

I am weary of only using Windows Vista 32-bit. Windows is so vulnerable to malicious software on the internet and I would really like to dual boot with Linux. Am I even going in the right direction to fix this problem?

You should be able to get it working by choosing Vesa as your video driver (generic) instead of Xorg. That's not a satisfactory long-term solution, but would give you a functional system without the eye-candy acceleration (no compiz). Then how to enable the nvidia performance...

It looks like others have solved this issue with the 8200 driver:

Good luck!
