Subject: Linux on 2nd Hard Drive

I'm new to linux and I want to play around with it on a second hard drive. Ok so that being said, here are my questions:

I hear a lot of talk about partitioning. Do I need to partition if I'm using an external hard drive to put linux on?
How do I put linux on the second hard drive and make it so I can dual boot?
What's all this talk about GRUB and MBR? What do I need to know?

Ok, that's my questions so far. If anyone knows of a nice how-to, I'd like to see it.

:)

Grub is the boot loader for linux. It is like what Windows uses when you have XP and Vista installed and you get a screen to chose which 1 you want to boot.

MBR stands for Master Boot Record. It is the entries or scripts (any other more knowledgeable forum member can correct me on this as I am not a programmer or geek) that Grub uses to boot up what Operating systems are installed on
Grubs menu.

When installing Linux, you'd be asked to choose the hard disk and partition you wish to install it on.

Also, Linux will ask you whether or not to install the bootloader (GRUB). Choose yes and that will install GRUB.

So I just download a copy of linux onto a CD and then put it in my CD drive and re-boot the computer and follow the directions?

Yes. You can also google search for detailed installation guides. Just about every distribution release a installation guide (with screenshots) that you can follow.

My seuggestion to you is to download sun xvmVirtual Box For windows and virtualize linux use this aqpplication. This way if you stll need extra space for NTFS partitions you cna just relocate the image from virtual Box to anoter hard drive or partition.
