Subject: Installing Fedora8 taking too much time

I have one hard drive, with Windows XP installed.

I've managed to get 30GB free space.

I have 191MB RAM, so the installer runs in text mode

When i create the partitions, i'm only able to make the / and /home partitions.

I can't make the swap partition, it shows some errors and/or exceptions

So, i continue with the installer..

Then it says that it may take longer without a swap partition, i continue anyway

When everything is ready, it says that is is starting install process, which may take several minutes.

But, i waited for 40Minutes! without lick.

Please help

Can you post the exact error in creating the SWAP partition. At 191 MB RAM, I don't think you should be running Fedora 8. In fact, Fedora, like Ubuntu, Mandriva and OpenSUSE, requires a lot more RAM, at least 512 MB and more is definitely better.

I suggest you try some older version of Fedora, or go in for light-weight distributions such as Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux or Zenwalk, etc.

There are 4 windows partitions right now on the hard drive.

Red pill?

Oh, i'll try to post the exact errors..

In case I'm unable to do so, it may be noted that it raises some exceptions when i create the swap partition just like any other partition, exception in anaconda installer functions..

You can have a maximum of 4 partitions per drive, as covered in Intel x86 specification. Partitions are containers for actual logical disks.
Partitons can be normal(one disk max, "boot from" allowed) or extended(up to 63 disks, no boot).
I guess u have used up all possibilities here. You can use something win32 based like Acronis Disk Director to repartiton the drive. DO NOT use Partition Magic - its very buggy on 60Gb+ drives.

U actually need only one logical disk, since swap can be used as a file and GRUB placed in MBR to boot from extended.

But its advanced setup, if youre new, buy new HDD and upgrade the memory to min 512MB. Its cheap,a good investment and will save you MUCH nerves! =)

Hi Somu,
Was away for a couple days. I think that Lin got it right. You need to either restructure the partition setup on your drive, or just get a second.
