I'm looking for a distro that doesnt have any fancy graphical interface and such - a really fast one, that doesnt waste memory on useless things.

I am running a Focusrite Sapphire LE soundcard, so I need it to be able to run that...
Basically I use my computer for a lot of sound and video stuff.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for such a distro?

(I don't know anything about Linux yet, I never tried it.)

I would also like to recommend Arch Linux. I haven't been running it for very long, but it has given me a _very_ good impression so far. I used to run Gentoo (which I loved) on the same machine, but Arch feels much more responsive despite the fact that it's package manager uses pre-compiled binaries. Installation is minimal and fast unless you have a sloppy connection.

It might be good with some basic knowledge about what applications you need to run in order to get everything the way you want it, but there is documentation for most stuff you want to get done. Most common apps can be installed by just running a command (e.g.: pacman -S fluxbox) and the packet manager will deal with downloading and installing the software for you. You'll really miss this if you ever go back to Windows.

Hardware support for the soundcard is provided via the kernel, so that doesn't really have anything to do which distro you choose.

You will need to install xorg and the window manager yourself after a new installation. Most beginners go with Gnome or KDE, but they're kind of big and hogs resources. I suggest running Fluxbox or Openbox, which are very fast and quite easy to use after a couple of minutes of orientation.
